The Most Important Step…

Over the years I must have built something close to 100 servers, and there are many vital stages to a build, from choosing the right OS (usually which flavour of Linux, but not always), through deciding where it sits in the network infrastructure to locking down or removing unneccesary services.

Without a doubt, though, none of these are as important as the following step: Naming your server.

Each place I’ve worked I’ve walked into a predecessor’s naming convention, from birds (Realise), Final Fantasy characters (navyblue) and Hindi Deities & Cartoon characters (Kraya).

Along the way I’ve encountered cheeses, Biblical characters, sit-com characters, all mannor of random names (Wilson? Rock?) and the most boring of all, the ones that describe what they are. Where’s the fun in that?

A few years ago when I was creating a new category of servers it was my turn to come up with a theme at last!

So see if you can work what these have in common, and which is the odd one out:

TauCeti, Avalon, Midnight, Matchday, Horace, Sentinel, Gyron, Zelda and Knightlore.

It’s not exactly hard to work out…
